The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers go head-to-head this Monday (Sunday American time) for Super Bowl LIV.
The American Football Superbowl (think AFL Grand Final on steroids) has an audience of over 103 million people worldwide, the majority of which are in the US. With viewership like that, advertising during the game commands big dollars. It is estimated that a 30 second ad spot can cost between $5 million and $5.6 Million USD. EACH.
So if you’re spending this type of money to advertise to the biggest engaged TV audience in the world, you better put on a fantastically memorable show. Things we’ve come to expect are big name celebrity cameos, fun storylines and memorable moments. Here are the top car related ads from the 2020 Super Bowl LIV for your viewing pleasure.
Bill Murray is back, again, and again for Groundhog Day. The classic comedy film from 1993 gets a 2020 reboot in the form of Super Bowl ad. We see Murray reprise his role of Phil Connors, a TV weatherman on assignment to cover the annual Punxsutawney Phil goundhog prediction. This time though, a Jeep Gladiator co-stars to spice up the deja vu sequences. Anything with Bill Murray gets a tick from us.
According to singer John Legend and his wife, model and TV presenter Chrissy Teigan, old luxury is dead. In this Genesis GV80 ad, the power couple hold a going away party for old luxury and celebrate young luxury in the form of the new SUV. Guests at the old luxury party include a guy who thinks his loud suit is a personality, a woman who claims she hasn't had any plastic surgery and a lady who went to Asia once and now thinks she is spiritual. All the markings of what Genesis sees as the owners of its competitors BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. Burn!
In Audi's Super Bowl ad, they ask all drivers to let it go, Frozen style with Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams driving around in an electric E-Tron singing the Disney hit song. We are guessing the connecting between Frozen's 'Let It Go' and an electric Audi is that they're asking everyone to let go of ICE (Internal combustion engines) and embrace an electric future. Clever.
What does Captain America (Chris Evans), Jim from The Office (John Krasinski), and Saturday Night Live and 30Rock's Rachel Dratch have in common? They all come from Boston, USA. In Hyundai's Super Bowl spot promoting the Sonata's Automatic Smart Parking tech, the Boston natives default back into the region's iconic accent for some wicked smart fun.
In this short film, Porsche's new electric Taycan is taken (see what they did there?) from the Porsche Museum's collection and is chased by an array of classic racing and road cars from the brand's heritage. All of which are part of the Museum's official collection, and is where the chase in the ad begins. Truly a Porsche fan's dream come true. This is the first ad Porsche has broadcast on US TV since 1997.
It's back, bigger more quieter than ever. This is the first look at the electric re-imagining of the HUMMER which will be a model line of GMC rather than a full brand. The end frame promises a reveal date of the 20th of May 2020 so we will wait in anticipation.
The new Toyota Highlander (Kluger to us Aussies) offers up room for everyone in this Super Bowl ad staring Cobie Smulders A.K.A. Robin Scherbatsky from How I Met Your Mother fame. It's a classic formula of Super Bowl car ads with crazy blockbuster scenarios and CGI monsters combining with everyday family shenanigans and the car as the hero.
More to be added as we hit Super Bowl Sunday (Monday AEDT).
