The five best cars from the Fast and the Furious film franchise

It’s one of the most popular, and profitable, franchises ever to hit the screens, raking in over $6.6 billion dollars at the box office. Not only is the cast iconic and jam-packed with superstars – from the great late Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, and Ludacris just to name a few  – but it also let rev-heads froth over some classic beauties while also introducing them to a whole new audience (i.e. the partners and siblings who were always called on to watch the odd movie or two… or all eight).

And while the franchise has highlighted some amazing muscle and sports cars throughout the franchise, here are five of the most recognisable cars.

Possibly the most iconic car from the franchise, the abandoned 1994 Toyota Supra became what most fans would associate Paul Walker’s character Brian O'Conner with from the OG movie back in 2001. It’s also the centre of a very emotional storyline, with Brian handing over the keys to Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) so he can escape following a street race. The Supra can do the quarter-mile in 10 seconds and of course one of the best moments of the film, if not the entire franchise, with Brian behind the wheel as he beats a guy in a Ferrari.

Fans may have also picked up on a touching tribute to the Supra, in the latest installment of the series, following Paul Walker’s untimely and tragic death. In the scene, a body double and CGI technology was used to make it look like Paul was driving. And in the final race against Dom, Brian is driving a Toyota Supra. While it’s a different colour and model to what he drove in the original, it’s nonetheless still very touching and is bound to bring on a few tears!

A big one driven by Dom over a number of films including the original, Fast & Furious, Fast Five and Furious 7, the classic car is famed for the insane 900 horsepower, and for holding a 9 second quarter-mile record. Fun fact – there were actually four of these beauties used throughout the franchise. One for close-up shots and modified with a fake blower, while there were also three more with big block engines.

Another rev-head’s dream driven by Brian in 2 Fast 2 Furious, he drove it to victory against his friends in yet another street race hosted by Tej Parker (portrayed by the one and only Luda). However, showing that sometimes it can all be smoke and mirrors on the silver screen, the cars shown in the film aren’t actually GTRs, due to the fact they needed to be able to do drift scenes. A few modifications were made to account for the usually all-wheel-drive system. The more you know!

Also known as the Mazda RX-7 VeilSide Fortune, audiences were introduced to this car in the franchise’s third installment, Tokyo Drift. Han Seoul-Oh drove it throughout the third movie and it’s the star of some very impressive moves before it’s ultimately destroyed. The RX-7’s big body kit is impressive, but it doesn’t come cheap, costing US$12,000 just for the kit alone. Fun fan fact: Han was the only Tokyo Drift character to appear in the subsequent films, before Sean Boswell in Furious 7.

Sure it didn’t have a big part to play in The Fast and The Furious, but it does hold a lot of sentimental value, as it’s the first car Walker’s character Brian drives in the first film. Brian drives the customised lime green car in a street race to try and win the favour of Dom, but a series of unfortunate events – including it falling apart – leads to Brian losing the race and the pink slip for the Eclipse. Ultimately the sports coupe is blown up in a surprise shoot out.

With a ninth film in the pipeline, it will be very interesting to see what new cars might make the cut for the next generation of this famed franchise.
