The most popular car featured in videogames worldwide has been revealed

Supras, Skylines and RX-7s feature strongly, but the most popular car in the videogame world is quite boring…

Holden fans are not going to like this… a new study has found that Ford is the most popular car brand in the world of videogames. But it gets worse – or better if you love big, gas-guzzling American V8 sedans…

The most popular car of all time to populate the world of interactive entertainment is not the Ford Falcon, but the Ford Crown Victoria Mk2. Yes, the old Crown Vic from the late 1990s, a dumpy-looking American jalopy that’s best described as the vehicular equivalent of an overweight Steve Buscemi: intriguing and at times amusing, but not pretty.

The iconic Mustang takes second place and Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport fans will be stoked to see that the Nissan Skyline, Toyota Supra and Mazda RX-7 round out the top five. But there’s no Ferraris, Lambos or any other exotic cars or brands within cooee of the top 10.

The Ford Crown Victoria? Really?!

We wouldn’t blame you if you’ve never heard of this vehicle but its rise to the top of the four-wheeled videogaming charts in terms of appearances is due to the fact that it has been one of America’s longest-serving police cars. It’s also an iconic New York taxi as well.

We’d wager the Ford Crown Vic would probably also be one of the most featured cars in movies too, having been destroyed in countless monster, alien invasion and natural disaster feature films.

According to a study undertaken Uswitch.com with a little help from the Internet Game Car Database, the Ford Crown Victoria showed up a whopping 635 times in videogames across the years, followed in second place by the original Ford Mustang, with 545 appearances.

You can check out the top 10 list below but there were some other interesting findings that many of the carsales editorial crew – many of whom are gamers – found interesting. For example, the most popular car colour in videogames is also yellow.

There are quite a few gamers in the carsales editorial crew and we always get excited when the Holden Commodore or Ford Falcon race cars were included in games, such as in some of the Gran Turismo and Forza games.
