The Porsche 928 Tom Cruise drove in Risky Business is up for auction

Updated: The 1979 Porsche 928 which stared alongside Tom Cruise in Risky Business has sold at auction for a record-breaking amount.

UPDATE 21 September 2021: The Porsche 928 driven by Tom Cruise in the '80s film Risky Business has been sold in the US overnight at auction for an eye-watering $1.98million ($2.7million AUD) making it the most expensive Porsche 928 ever sold at auction.

1983 film Risky Business has danced its way into the hearts and minds of movie fans worldwide and launched the career of an up-and-comer called Tom Cruise. Whose tighty-whitey-clad performance to Bob Seger’s Old Time Rock & Roll remains an iconic part of cinematic history.

Cruise starred as teen Joel Goodsen (good son), who finds himself alone in the house while his parents escape to some far-off paradise without him. In true 1980s film style, mischief ensues as the poignantly named ‘good son’ drives around in his father’s Porsche 928.

The shark-nosed, bug-eyed 928 was selected for the role by the film’s writer and director Paul Brickman, who claimed that its sibling, the 911 was 'too mundane'. To Brickman, the 928 was the perfect choice for a successful businessman and the perfect car to land a teenager in a whole lot of trouble.

The 1979 Porsche 928 is being offered up for auction at the inaugural 2021 Barrett-Jackson Houston Auction with no set reserve price. Similar model year Porsche 928s on carsales are sitting around $75,000.

Several 928s were used during the film’s production but we have been assured that the one up for auction is not the one that found itself submerged in Lake Michigan. The auction item 928 received the majority of screen time and was one of three cars driven onset and one of two used during the chase scene. Some may recall this chase scene included Cruise looking straight to the camera and saying the brand’s slogan, “Porsche. There is no substitute.” Now that’s product placement!

Some fun facts about the car: Aside from its starring role in the film, this particular car can be attributed to the one Tom Cruise learned to drive manual in! Originally the car was finished in green but was repainted in gold for the movie.

The lucky new owner will also receive official signatures from several members of the film’s cast including Bronson Pinchot (Barry), Joe Pantoliano (Guido), Curtis Armstrong (Miles) and Francine Locke (Shower Girl) and it also includes several images of the car on set covered in camera rigging equipment.

The auction of the 1979 Porsche 928 by Barrett-Jackson will be held between the 16th and 18th of September 2021 in Houston, Texas.
