The top car related April Fool’s Day jokes of 2019

Every 1st of April, people, brands, organisations and the like always try their best to fool us into believing the unbelievable. Most of the time we aren’t fooled but sometimes the ‘joke’ seems a little too real.

The prank day has been popular around the world since the 19th century but surprisingly little is known about the actual origins of this tradition. Perhaps a well-orchestrated prank in itself? The tradition goes that an April Fool’s Day joke is revealed by shouting “April fool!” at the recipient of the joke who becomes the “April fool” with all pranks and joking ending at midday.

The best regarded April Fool’s Day joke was from 1957 when the BBC current-affairs show Panorama broadcast a hoax report into a Swiss family who harvested their spaghetti from a so called “spaghetti tree”. It’s reported that hundreds of viewers phoned the station to question the authenticity of the story or to ask for more information about how they could grow their own spaghetti tree!

Here are our favourite 2019 April Fool’s Day attempts from the car world.

The HiAce convertible is said to also come with an option of a built-in pie oven called the ‘PieAce’, disguised neatly behind the rear tailgate. Delicious and stylish have never looked so strange.

The Audi b-tron concept

Audi has revamped it's impending new e-tron electric car with another alternative fuel choice, one of mankind’s most ancient and energy dense sources: honey.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce this exciting new development, which will debut at next month’s New York Auto Show,” says Imker Honig, of Ingolstadt’s legendary Komplett Geschminkt skunkworks. “The idea, which came to me over breakfast, is just one of several new technologies that Audi will debut over the next 12 months.”

“The b-tron concept was very challenging,” says Honig. “Early prototypes tended to attract scores of bees, typically around the hexagonal fuel cap. One tester was swarmed by a hive that had settled in the glove compartment. I don’t think he’ll be doing that again, ha!”

It is said to BEE a pretty sweet ride.

By taking more cars off the road and getting more people onto the pogo stick, we can give cities another tool to help fight congestion, and therefore pollution."

The team worked with Dunlop to produce a paddle-like tyre and installed buoyancy tanks and an extra-large fuel tank for the journey. The trip across the strait took just under 6-hours, averaging a speed of 35 knots (65 kilometres per hour).
