The weirdest car related world records

Who doesn’t love a world record attempt especially when it involves a car of some sort?

You’ve heard of those world records of the fastest, tallest, smallest, longest line of cars, but what about some of the weirder record breaking attempts? We’ve scoured through the record books to find the weirdest car related world records currently held. Why these people have decided to break these kinds of records is beyond us, but it does make you wonder, could I do that? Here are some of the weirdest car related world records which piqued our interest.

Hairiest car

Italian hairstylist Maria Lucia Mugno thought that she would give a car related world record a crack so she covered her Fiat 500 with 120kg of 100% natural hair. That’s right, 120kg of natural hair attached to a Fiat 500. It took Maria 150 hours to complete this hairy Fiat feat and cost around €80,000 ($131,000 AUD). The car is fully functional and to keep the natural blondes and browns of the hair in peak condition, Maria uses shampoo, conditioner and hair sprays to keep it looking good.

Longest custom banana car

In 2011, Steve Braithwaite from the USA was bestowed the world record for his construction of the longest custom banana car. This unique Big Banana Car was based on a Ford F-150 pick-up truck, the measuring 6.97m long and 3.09m high. The banana itself is constructed from chicken wire and polyurethane foam and fibreglass. How fast does this banana go? With a top speed of 136.79 km/h this is one fast banana and the world's only four-wheel drive one at that. The only answer we don’t have out of all of this is why this is a thing.

Longest time to kiss a car

Do you love your car? Prove it! Ernesta Hernandez Ambrosio and Jesús Juárez Vite from Mexico showed their appreciation for their car by kissing it for 76 hours in 2013. Most relationships don’t get that level of attention and affection. This dedication helped them to be awarded the world record.

Tightest car parallel parking

For most of us, attempting a reverse parallel park is stressful enough when the space is much larger than the car we are in.  In 2015, Alastair Moffatt took the challenge of the tightest reverse parallel park and added an extra level of complexity by driving in reverse. He even manoeuvred the car into the space by doing a handbrake turn. Not only did he fit the car in perfectly, he managed to squeeze the Mini into a space that was only 34cm larger than the car itself.

Farthest distance limbo-skating under cars.

A 6 year-old boy from India has glided his way into the record books for the farthest distance limbo-skating under cars. Om Swaroop Gowda rolled 65.283m while holding his body just above ground and maintaining the splits under 36 cars. Hands and fingers are not allowed to touch the ground at any point during the attempt with the gap beneath each car no more than 35cm. Unbelievable!

Most people crammed into an 'old' VW Beetle

It’s an age old question, how many people can we squeeze into a tiny car? Well according to the record books the answer to that is currently 20. Back in 2010, a 1964 VW Beetle was used for the record breaking attempt in Kentucky, USA. This is quite a popular record to break with the previous record in 2009 with 17 people crammed in a 1971 VW Beetle and before that the record went to 15 people squashed in a Beetle in Brazil in 2008.

Farthest arrow fired and caught in a moving car

A very much ‘do not try this at home’ world record. Austrian world champion archer Laurence Baldauff, Markus Haas 'the catcher' and Guido Gluschitsch 'the driver' teamed up to attempt the record for farthest arrow fired and caught in a moving car. The arrow was shot at 215km/h and was caught by Marcus 57.5 meters away, while he was standing out of the sunroof of a Škoda Octavia RS 245. Crazy stuff!

Most consecutive cars jumped over on a pogo stick

Back in 2017, Dalton Smith part of the XPOGO Stunt Team used a pogo stick to jump over three Nissan Juke SUVs in a row with just one bounce between them. This won him a place in the world record books for the most consecutive cars jumped over on a pogo stick. Now that is some scarily impressive skills.

Farthest distance pushing a car in 24 hours by an individual

Tomislav Lubenjak, from Zagreb, Croatia pushed a Smart Car 106.938km in 24 hours setting a new world record. He smashed the previous record holder’s distance of 82km pushing on for a further 24km to take the glory. Tomislav took short three minute breaks every hour and consumed high-calorie tablets and sugar to give him the energy to push through. If you're going to break down on the side of the road, this is the guy you would hope to help you push your car to the servo!
