It’s a hypercar most of us will be able to afford but it does come with a big catch: you have to build it yourself and you’ll never be able to drive it.
Introducing the latest member of the LEGO Technic Ultimate Car Concept Series, the LEGO Technic McLaren P1.
Created in collaboration with McLaren Automotive, the focus behind the latest LEGO Technic offering was to implement as much cutting-edge functionality in the scaled-down model as possible all while paying tribute to the real P1.
Only 375 units of the real thing were ever built, manufactured between 2013-2015, and powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine with a lightweight electric motor to make a whopping 674kW/898Nm (combined outputs).
Available to purchase from 1 August 2024, the 1:8 scale version of the British marque’s iconic hybrid hypercar is made up of 3893 pieces and each example will come with a unique serial number which will allow the owner to unlock ‘special behind-the-scenes content’.
And it’ll set you back $699.99.
But LEGO fans should feel like they’re getting their money’s worth while assembling the P1’s seven-speed gearbox, suspension, V8 engine, adjustable rear spoiler, and opening dihedral doors, all of which are said to guarantee ‘an immersive building experience from start to finish that is authentic to the real McLaren P1’.
“It’s amazing to see so many of the elements from the original P1 brought to life by the LEGO team for the LEGO Technic McLaren P1,” said McLaren Automotive chief design officer, Tobias Suhlmann.
“I hope this collaboration inspires the next generation of designers and engineers to push the boundaries of automotive innovation,” he said.
“From the exterior with aerodynamic shapes to the interior and V8 piston engine – the real McLaren P1 is an incredible car. We wanted to capture these details in the best way possible with our LEGO Technic model and we did not want to compromise in any way.”
