With Volkswagen expected to take the wraps of its all-new Tiguan at this month's Paris Motor Show, the German brand has this week announced a revision for its much-loved compact SUV, extending the fuel saving benefits of a DSG transmission to its entire 2011 Model Year range.
Replacing the current six-speed automatic transmission, the seven-speed wet-plate DSG (or dual-clutch transmission) unit can now be optioned on all Tiguan models, petrol and diesel, and comes standard on the range-topping Tiguan 147TSI.
The news comes only months after the quick shifting seven-speed DSG transmission was adopted by Volkswagen's new Transporter, Caravelle and Multivan range, combining the comfort and convenience of a regular automatic transmission with the fuel efficiency of a manual gearbox.
When mated to the Tiguan 103TDI (103kW turbodiesel) engine, the new transmission returns a combined fuel economy average of just 6.6L/100km – a 16 per cent reduction from the conventional six-speed automatic, while in petrol-powered Tiguan 125TSI and 147TSI, this figure has fallen to 8.8L/100km for a 13 per cent reduction.
Like most dual-clutch transmissions, the Volkswagen unit shifts gears within a few hundredths of a second with no interruption to drive.
MY2011 Volkswagen Tiguan pricing remains unchanged, as follows:
