Mazda has announced it will reveal five new concepts based on its existing model range at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 15.
Sadly, for those hoping and waiting for the Japanese car-maker to launch faster more powerful MPS/Mazdaspeed versions of their favourite Mazda, the concepts are all thought to run standard, unmodified engines.
Instead, they’ve all been created to show what aftermarket options may soon be available through your local Mazda dealer, including a ready to rally racer.
Two modified Mazda MX-5 spearhead the firm’s offerings. One called the Roadstar has a neat aero package, bigger brakes and wheels, plus a pair of more supportive Recaro seats.
The other, the Roadster NR-A Racing Spec, appears to be an extreme, dedicated track day tool. That’s why it comes with a full rollcage and motorsport-inspired race bucket seats with four-point race harnesses. The Racing Spec also comes with ultra-light alloy wheels and stickier tyres more suitable for circuit work.
The CX-3 Racing Concept and the Mazda6 concept (called the Atenza Racing Concept), meanwhile, both come with more supportive bucket seats, a lower ride height, bigger wheels and subtle side skirts and spoilers.
The final car to be revealed at the Japanese aftermarket expo is, what appears to be, a ready to rally version of the Mazda2. Called the Demio 15MB Racing Spec, the stripped out small hatch comes with a full cage, bucket seats and a trip meter for a navigator. The only thing missing is a hydraulic handbrake.
The little rally car is expected to be offered in the North American market to private rally teams.
More information on all the cars is expected following their official unveiling.
