Tokyo Auto Salon: Subaru shows off BRZ STI Concept

Rear-wheel drive riot gets STI styling but still misses out on the power upgrades we desire

Subaru has released a single picture of an uprated version of the BRZ coupe it plans to unveil at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 13.

Unfortunately, it's not the wild BRZ STI that the Japanese car maker patented more than a year ago.

That means it misses out on that car's turbocharged 225kW/450Nm 2.0-litre.

Instead, the BRZ STI concept is merely a frustrating styling exercise that's thought will debut a range of dealer-fit options for the rear-wheel drive coupe.

That means the BRZ comes with black-painted 18-inch alloy wheels, side skirts and a subtle front splitter and misleading STI decals.

Inside, Subaru designers have added burgundy-coloured sport seats.

It's still not known what's happened to the 'real' STI-version of the BRZ that was patented back in 2015.

The good news is if it ever does surface it's almost certain to be sold Down Under following Subaru Tecnica International (STI) boss, Yoshio Hirakawa, admitted to motoring.com.au that Australia was one of the most important markets in the world for the performance sub-brand.
