Tokyo debut for Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept

Is it an Alfa Romeo or a Subie? Its styling might have a distinctly Latin flavour, but this design study packs the latest in Japanese tech

Subaru will use the upcoming Tokyo motor show (which opens to the public on October 23) to pull wraps off its Hybrid Tourer Concept, a car that showcases the brand's future design language and latest-gen hybrid technology.

Built around Subaru's trademark Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) layout and utilising a turbocharged flat-four engine, the concept also features a pair of supplementary electric motors (a 10kW unit that drives the front axle and a 20kW motor that drives the rear axle).

The 2.0-litre turbo engine uses a direct-injection system for claimed improvements in fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, along with "improved torque and response in practical range".

At start-up and extremely low speeds propulsion is provided by the rear electric motor, and it assumes a supplementary role as speeds increase, adding thrust to the acceleration provided by the petrol engine.

Further thrust is generated by the front-mounted electric motor (which is normally used as a power generator) when accelerating uphill. As with existing hybrids, the petrol engine cuts out as soon as the car comes to a halt.

Subaru says its high-performance lithium battery is based on experience and know-how gained via the plug-in STELLA electric vehicle, launched earlier this year.

Drive from the petrol engine is relayed to the wheels via the company's new-generation Lineartronic CVT, which is claimed to deliver further improvements in both fuel efficiency and performance.

The Hybrid Tourer Concept's styling bears a remarkable resemblance to the Alfa Romeo Brera, and this is no doubt due to the influence of former chief stylist Andreas Zapatinas (who left Alfa in 2002 to join Subaru).

An interesting design element is the large Mercedes SLS-esque gullwing doors, each of which provides access to the front and rear seats.

The cabin features four independent seats and the top of the dashboard is height-adjustable to provide the driver with an optimal view.

Despite the car's AWD layout, some clever packaging has yielded a flat floor ahead of the rear seats, adding to the feeling of comfort and space, claims Subaru.

Other tech highlights include a special shielding in the windshield to reduce driver eyestrain and new leather covering on the seats that allegedly offers superior breathability.
