TOKYO MOTOR SHOW: Electric Suzuki eVX small SUV revealed
All-new battery-electric Suzuki small SUV to offer 500km-plus range when it goes on sale in 2025A near-production Suzuki eVX concept has been unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show this week, previewing the brand’s first EV that will launch in 2025.
Said to be around the same size as the current Suzuki S-Cross small SUV, the Suzuki eVX concept is an updated version of the show car of the same name that was unveiled earlier this year at Auto Expo 2023 in Delhi, India.
Drawing energy from a 60kWh battery, the Suzuki eVX can cover up to 550km on the Indian EV test cycle which should equate to around 500km under the European WLTP regime.
Featuring a decent ground clearance, the eVX is said to benefit from the car-maker’s partnership with Toyota, which is preparing to launch its first EV Down Under early next year in the form of the 2024 Toyota bZ4X mid-size SUV – the upgraded version of which was also unveiled in Tokyo yesterday.
Set to be priced at around $45,000, the Suzuki eVX will come with only a single-motor two-wheel drive layout, whereas the bZ4X offers the option of a second e-motor and all-wheel drive.
What will boost traction off-road is a new two-speed transmission that can also improve acceleration while boosting range by up to 15 per cent.
It’s still not known what platform underpins the eVX, but it could be Toyota’s e-TNGA architecture, with the likelihood the small Suzuki SUV could be twinned with an incoming sub-bZ4X model from Toyota.
The production version of the Suzuki eVX is expected to be unveiled early next year.
