Mazda has teased a new sports car concept ahead of its debut at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show later this month, when all eyes will be watching to see if it previews an electrified future-generation Mazda MX-5.
The odds are looking good, judging by Mazda’s description of its show exhibit and concept, given the Japanese car-maker’s stand will focus on the MX-5 and be based around the theme of “the future created by the love of cars”.
The MX-5 is arguably Mazda’s most-loved model – certainly of those still in production – and rumours of a hybrid or even battery-electric makeover for the iconic sports car have been swirling for years now.
Look closely and you’ll probably notice illuminated tail-lights closely resembling the shape of the original MX-5’s rear signature in both size, shape and positioning as well as the following two generations.
A red vertical element adds some purposefulness to the arrangement and the otherwise hidden rear-end.
Referring to the overarching theme, Mazda says the stand is designed to show the brand’s “continued commitment to the creation of products that satisfy customers’ love of driving and cars” and that the concept is “designed to symbolise the exhibit”.
A two-thirds scale model MX-5 will be on site for kids to enjoy a simulated drive along, with an ‘MX-5 SeDV’ prototype able to be controlled exclusively by the driver’s hands.
“Out of its stand, Mazda will join the show programs organised by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association,” said Mazda.
“In the motorsport area, Mazda will display ‘Mazda2 Bio Concept’, fuelled by the next-generation bio diesel.”
The 2023 Japan Mobility Show will open on October 26 and run until November 5 at the Tokyo Big Sight convention centre.
