Yamaha has released a small, low-resolution image of a show car the company plans to roll out at the Tokyo motor show next week.
Viewed in side profile, the vehicle appears to be a two-seat sports car. Yamaha has said little about it, other than observing the car will be 'inspired by motorcycles' and expressing 'the Unique Style of Yamaha'.
Without a sense of scale in the picture, the vehicle could be very compact – which would fit with the company's resolve to market its own small-car range in Europe from 2016. The greenhouse appears to incorporate a long liftback hatch, but the front end leaves little room for an engine, unless it's an electric motor, which could be on the cards.
Given the apparent packaging constraints and the 'motorcycle inspiration', the Yamaha concept could be a new take on the smart Roadster – small engine driving the rear wheels in a two-seat sports car that's also frugal to own and operate. And certainly Yamaha's previous venture in four-wheeled vehicle design, the MOTIV.e, showed clear signs the motorcycle brand was looking to smart for inspiration, rather than its own motorcycles.
