As demand for video content continues to skyrocket and viewers continue to prefer easier-to-digest appraisals of their next potential automotive purchase, one theme stood out above all others when it came to our top five vids of 2023 – comparisons.
The most-watched videos on the carsales website and across our YouTube channel had another thing in common beyond their multi-vehicle assessment format – yep, they all featured Toyota vehicles.
But there were also a couple of curve-balls in there, including a simple life hack that elegantly and quickly addresses a familiar problem and the emergence of increasingly popular Indian-made family SUVs that are taking the fight to cut-price Chinese models.
These were the five most-watched videos of 2023.
Sam Charlwood takes the reins on this crucial contest pitting the best ute in its class – Ford Ranger – against Australia’s top-selling ute (Toyota HiLux) and the newest, most luxurious ute to arrive Down Under since the ill-fated Mercedes-Benz X-Class – the Volkswagen Amarok.
Adding more intrigue to this three-way ute contest is the fact the second-generation Amarok is based on the Ford Ranger – from which it borrows its Australian-developed ladder chassis, as well as its engine and other hardware – making this showdown the must-watch vid of 2023.
Our second most-viewed video of 2023 was another comparison – and another Ford-versus-Toyota stoush. But this time it’s off-road capable large family SUVs duking it out, not utes.
Bruce Newtown lines up the near-near Ford Everest with the 14-year-old Toyota Prado – still Australia’s favourite large SUV – to see which is the best full-size off-road SUV.
The Chinese-made GWM Tank 300 is certainly not a direct rival for the evergreen Toyota Prado, but that didn’t stop Scott Newman’s video comparison being hugely popular in 2023.
The idea here was to see if a large off-road 4x4 wagon around half the price of a Prado could put up a fight. And clearly viewers were keen to see how it all went down.
As the Korean car-makers move out of the budget end of the new-vehicle market, Chinese brands have moved in – and, more recently, Indian brands are getting in on the action too.
Case in point, the Mahindra XUV700, which at $36,990 drive-away is Australia’s cheapest seven-seat family SUV. It was well received by viewers and our critics, earning an overall rating of 83/100.
Unlike the other longer-form videos in this list, this advice video goes for just under two minutes and clearly resonated with car owners who’ve run into trouble with flat batteries in their remote key fob.
Another difference to the other top-viewed videos this year was the fact it wasn’t produced in 2023, but 2020. The gift that keeps giving.
