Top five cheap turbo cars you’ll want to drive

The automotive world is always changing but turbocharged fun can still be affordable – and P-platers can drive them

Not everyone can afford a hot hatch, but there are alternatives that won't break the bank.

We've assembled a list of five cheap turbo cars that are enjoyable to drive and affordable to own. Only one slides in below $20,000, but three of the others will set you back less than $23,000.

And each and every one of these cheap turbo cars can be driven by P-plate drivers in New South Wales, according to RedBook data.

Easy on the pocket, easy to drive, practical and satisfying… What's not to like?

Priced from $20,525 for the five-speed manual (or $22,525 with the six-speed dual-clutch transmission), the Fiesta Sport delivers Euro-style light hatch driveability at a Thai-built price.

The tiny Ford is getting on in years, but among the field of cheap turbo cars available in Australia it's still a hard act to follow.

The most expensive of our cheap turbo cars is still within reach at $25,922 for the MINI Ray manual three-door hatch. Only MINI trainspotters will pick that you're not driving one of the sportier models.

What's not to love? With its go-kart-like handling dynamics – along with sub-5.0L/100km fuel economy.

One of just two auto-only examples in our list of cheap turbo cars, the Peugeot 208 Active is stylish and enjoyable to drive, with a particular focus on comfort and presentation.

Not everyone welcomes the unusual cabin ergonomics, but for those that do, the Peugeot is something apart from the rest of the flock.

As the budget-buster in this selection of cheap turbo cars, the Skoda Fabia is over $4000 cheaper than the next most affordable model, the Fiesta Sport. But it comes with meagre power and a manual transmission only.

If you need a self-shifting transmission you'll need to step up to the higher-performance 81TSI model, which is still turbo and priced at just under $20,000.

Fairly new to the market, the Baleno GLX Turbo won our recent light hatch comparison, mostly on the strength of its unexpected performance.

The Suzuki proved itself a worthy winner with good accommodation and practicality, and it's a good balance of price and specification for a strong value package.
