We’ve seen unprecedented demand for collectible sports cars in Australia this year as cashed-up buyers look to invest in rare performance models.
But where auction bidding frenzies have produced some stunning results, the top five most expensive cars currently listed on carsales are all sports cars of the highest calibre – and worth close inspection.
From stunning classics from Aston Martin, Bentley and Porsche to a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series and McLaren Senna GTR, if you’ve got between $1.5 million and $3 million burning a hole in your pocket, then we’ve got the sports car for you…
First up, we’re taking you back to the 1950s with this “1 of 1” Bentley 6-Litre Petersen Dartmoor Coupe.
The asking price for this fully restored Batmobile-esque coupe is $1,250,000, with the dealership describing it as “unparalleled art deco artistry”.
Powered by a Rolls-Royce-derived 6.0-litre straight-eight, mated to a four-speed manual, the wheelbase is said to have been modified and extended, with a conversion from gas to unleaded petrol over the years.
According to the seller, “there will not be another car built in this colour and trim specification, making this 1 of 1”.

Calling all Aussie millionaires, now’s your chance to get your hands on one of just 28 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series to hit our shores.
Powered by a 537kW 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, this road-legal race car is said to be one of six finished in the radiant Magma Orange hue and can hurtle you from 0-100km/h in just 3.2 seconds.
With 72km on its clock, the asking price for this ‘dealer demo’ is a fresh $1.5 million.
That’s well up from the list price at new of $796,900 plus on-road costs, but the 28 original owners were all expected to part with more than $1 million once they had tailored the supercar to their individual specification.

Another rare find is this stunning 1963 Aston Martin DB5, which is considered one of the British marque’s most famous models with starring roles in a variety of James Bond films.
Presented in its original Goodwood Green over White Gold livery, the current owner says this particular example of the luxury grand tourer is “the first and possibly only Australian-delivered DB5”.
With an asking price of $1.695 million and just under 90,000km on the odometer, this DB5 is said to have been sent back to the UK in 1995 for a full restoration by Aston Martin specialist RS Williams before heading back to Australia.
Several owners later, it’s today “stored in climate controlled luxury, regularly exercised and serviced, and it drives superbly”, according to the owner’s description.
But there’s a catch. The car is in the UK, where it’s been located since 2016, which is obviously something for prospective buyers to consider – be it shipping costs or ongoing storage and maintenance.
Indeed, once international travel resumes, it could be the perfect car to have stationed abroad for 007-style adventures.
As our listing points out: “If the new owner chooses to store and maintain the car in England, with access to the many and varied automotive delights available in the UK and Europe, then there is a huge saving in luxury car tax, stamp duty and GST compared to an Australian purchase, with all the advantages of an Australian-delivered car and history”.

If you’ve ever wanted to get your very own piece of Porsche history, this could be your ticket.
With around 1200 examples ever built, production of the Porsche Carrera GT ended after just three years and most examples were thought to have ended up in the US.
Powered by a naturally-aspirated 450kW/590Nm 5.7-litre V10, the GT is able to conquer the 0-100km/h sprint in just 3.9 seconds.
Based at a Victorian dealership, the Euro-spec left-hand drive Carrera GT has an asking price of $1,775,000.
This particular example – and likely the only one in Australia – comes with less than 4000km on the odometer, a swanky brown leather interior and bright yellow brake callipers.

Not only is this awesome 2020 McLaren Senna GTR the most expensive used car currently listed on carsales, but the dealership responsible for the sale of the British-made track-focused hypercar says it’s the only one for sale in the country right now.
The vehicle in question – a strictly limited-edition 607kW track-only hypercar – is up for a cool $3 million and is build number 24 of just 75 globally.
Powered by a whopping 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, the Senna GTR cannot be road-registered – unlike the road-legal Senna it’s based on (and which Luke Youlden put through its paces at the international launch in Portugal a few years back).
Currently stickered in Marlboro graphics (‘Ayrton’ livery) for advertising purposes, the used example of the McLaren Senna GTR has just 369km on the clock and can be “easily” stripped back to its white exterior paint job at the next owner’s desire.
It’s hard to argue with the description on our listing: “This is the ultimate driver’s car for those who thought they had driven everything.”
