Top five most watched videos of 2019

There's a good chance that if you bought a new vehicle in the last few years, it was either an SUV or a dual-cab ute.

These are the vehicle types dominating the new car sales charts and – surprise, surprise – this trend is reflected in how viewers are digesting videos on the carsales.com.au editorial website, taking out four of the top five spots.

OK, so the Suzuki Jimny is not a big-seller or a conventional SUV and the new Chevrolet Corvette which is coming to Australia, also made the list, but vehicles like the top-selling Ford Ranger and Toyota RAV4 are understandably heavily researched.

But enough yammering, here are our five most-watched videos for 2019:

5. 2019 Suzuki Jimny Video Review

What is it about the Jimny that makes it so popular? As the video rightly points out, it's got a poor crash rating, the engine is a wheezy anachronism and its on-road behaviour is best described as sketchy.

But with its cheeky retro design, low price and incredible off-road skill set, the micro mud-slinger gets more attention than an errant celebrity nipple slip.

4. Toyota RAV4 2019 Video Review

The new Toyota RAV4 has been a sell-out success and with waiting lists for the hybrid models stretching out to nine months in Australia, it was inevitable this SUV would make it into the top five.

As the price premium for hybrid vehicles in the Toyota line-up comes down and diesels become less palatable, expect to see hybrids – and by extension EVs – attracting a lot more eyeballs in the next decade.

3. Ford Ranger XLT 3.2 v Ford Ranger XLT 2.0 Bi-Turbo Tow Test 

This is almost like a Marvel spin-off movie, as the winner of the 2019 Best Dual-Cab 4WD Ute feature vid gets more time in the sun!

The plot twist is when the winning vehicle gets a doppelganger, two Ford Rangers battling it out in a tug-of-war to decide which is the best tow vehicle.

2. 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray explained

When new Chevy Corvette Stingray broke cover in mid-July, it ate up a colossal amount of digital bandwidth – almost taking top spot – and for good reason.

The first-ever mid-engine 'Vette looks like no other and the big news that really helped it gallop to second place in this list was its confirmation for the Aussie market.

The potent 6.2-litre V8-powered sports car will continue to generate significant interest as it makes it way to Holden dealerships in early 2021.

Australia's love affair with utes is legendary and it comes as no surprise the 2019 Best Dual-Cab 4WD Ute video was our most watched vid in 2019.

While there are seven videos that make up this juggernaut biennial comparison, the main feature vid (including the overall verdict) was the most popular.
