More than 2000 news articles were published by the carsales editorial team in 2023, covering more new car brands than ever before and everything from conventional internal combustion models to hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and even hydrogen-powered vehicles.
But one brand dominated the top five most-read news articles this year, with Toyota snaffling three of the top spots, while the 2023 carales Car of the Year announcement and yet another ‘Best’ award rounded out the top five.

The hunger for news of the next-generation Toyota HiLux ute reached new highs in 2023 as design details and mechanical fundamentals of the replacement for Australia’s most popular ute (and new vehicle, period) came into focus.
We’ll continue to publish fresh intel on the new HiLux as we unearth it in 2024 so, given it’s not expected to go on sale in Australia until 2025, there’s a strong chance the Thai-built pick-up will once again join this exulted list next year.

Interest is always huge when Toyota renews a popular existing model – let alone an all-new replacement for Australia’s top-selling large SUV – and there was no shortage of curiosity when the 2024 Toyota Prado was unveiled (as North America’s new LandCruiser) earlier this year.
Sporting a boxy new ‘Lego-like’ design and a footprint as big as the 300 Series LandCruiser’s, the new 250 Series Prado will be bigger, tougher and arguably even more appealing than the 14-year-old model it replaces.

Our third most-read news article heralded the MG4 as our 2023 Car of the Year, which generated a lot of buzz and even some controversy.
It’s the first time a Chinese brand has claimed our coveted annual award – but not the first time an EV has won it.

This cheeky play on words clearly resonated with readers and Google bots alike, as did this computer-generated preview of what the next-gen 2026 Toyota Fortuner might look like.
As the third Toyota news article in the top five, it shows just how much reader interest there is in future Toyota models – especially off-road capable SUVs and utes.

The continued success of our exhaustive ‘Best’ series isn’t strictly reserved for new cars and readers were all too eager to delve into this year’s Best Used Cars award covering 10 categories.
Fan favourites included the Best Used Large Car, which went to the seminal 2016 Holden Commodore VFII SS-V Redline Sportwagon, and the Best Used Sports Car – the 2016 Toyota 86 GTS.
