5. Mitsubishi Triton gets a new look

With dual-cab utes now considered a key battleground for car-makers, a mid-life update to any one of the major players is usually big news to the Australian public.

Mitsubishi’s popular Triton proved as much when spy photos of a heavily camouflaged prototype emerged earlier in the year.

Bearing a bold new face as well as meaningful underbody changes, the dust-clad Triton struck a chord with readers and sets the stage for quite the splash in dealerships.

Combining the aforementioned success of the utility with remnants of another cherished Australian identity, Holden Special Vehicles, or HSV, seems a sure-fire recipe for drawing attention.

That was certainly the case when HSV released pricing and specification details for the Australianised Silverado pick-up.

Never mind that pricing starts at $115,000, the ideal of an oversized hay-hauler resonates with readers. The numbers don’t lie.

Let’s be honest, motoring journalism will never be as impactful to the public or far-reaching as other disciplines within the Fourth Estate. But it still plays an important role.

Back in February, we published details of vehicles affected by the continuing Takata airbag recall saga, one which now encompasses more than four million Australian cars.

The reader response has been incredible, and what’s more, we have continued to update the story with new affected vehicles whenever required. Do yourself a favour and see whether your vehicle is concerned.

Everyone loves the idea of a new-generation Subaru WRX, even us.

So when renderings purportedly teasing the next-gen 2020 model surfaced earlier in the year, fan-boys and car enthusiasts alike took note.

The illustrations and in-depth ‘what we already know’ account piqued the interest of readers, earning this piece number two on our 2018 list.

1. Subaru WRX concept takes the cake

If a Subaru WRX rendering is enough to sneak to the pointy end of the charts, imagine a story on a real-life STI concept car!

The Subaru Viziv Performance STI Concept validated this theory in January when a prototype was unearthed at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The story went gangbusters, earning its place at the top of the charts as most-read news story for 2018.

New car tastes might change, but happily, some things stay the same.
