The general perception of the Toyota HiLux as 'worthy but dull' probably changed forever when the team from British TV show Top Gear drove one across frozen oceans to reach the magnetic North Pole.
Fitted with massive tyres and a relocated front axle, among other bits of kit to suit it to the arctic environment, the bright red dual-cab pick-up was filmed launching itself off moguls and ploughing its way through deep snow in what was a highly impressive piece of television.
The company that modified the HiLux for the journey to the North Pole is 'Arctic Trucks', a firm that began life as an offshoot of Toyota Iceland 20 years ago. Based in Reykjavik, capital of Iceland, the company is now offering the unique opportunity to see Iceland's tundra, glaciers, lava fields and mountains, at the helm of a HiLux similar to the one that appeared on TV. Ranging in duration from two to five days, each tour will take in the Icelandic wilderness, with all its deep snow and thin ice, in the comparative safety and comfort of a modified HiLux perched on 38-inch tyres. Arctic Trucks have set aside two HiLux vehicles for the tour fleet. Both vehicles are powered by the same 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine fitted to the Top Gear HiLux.
