Chinese car-maker GWM has developed an even more rugged and powerful take on its popular Tank 300 off-road SUV called the GWM Tank 330, which features a V6 petrol engine and can go further off-road.
Discovered by CarNewsChina following a government leak, the 2024 GWM Tank 330 is said to have originally started life as a crowdfunded project that required 1000 Tank fans to place a deposit of 20,000 Chinese yuan ($A4400).
According to reports, it took just six seconds for all the spots to be snapped up.
Based on the GWM Tank 300 Frontier Edition that’s sold in China, the tougher Tank 330 gets a redesigned three-bar grille, new steel front and rear bumpers, wider wheel-arches and larger side steps.
Other changes include new bonnet vents to aid cooling, a new roof rack and an amusing rear tailgate spoiler.
There’s also a set of 18-inch alloy wheels and a tow hook.
Thanks to some engineering changes and the addition of those new bumpers, the approach and departure angles increase by three degrees to 36 and 37 degrees respectively.
The wading depth has also increased from 700mm to a whopping 900mm, matching Range Rover models that have height-adjustable air suspension.
Under the bonnet, the Tank 300’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine (162kW/380Nm) has been replaced by a much more muscular turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 that pumps out 265kW and 500Nm of torque.
The Tank 330 is due to launch in China later this year, priced from around 350,000 yuan ($A72,000).
There’s no word yet if the faster, more powerful and even more capable Tank will be offered Down Under, but it’s sure to be on GWM Australia’s radar.
GWM’s expansion in Australia continues this year with a variety of models, headlined by the larger GWM Tank 500 that takes aim at the new Toyota Prado.
