Toyota Australia has released an 86 racer for punters, revealing a new track-ready limited-edition model.
Just 60 examples of the track-focussed machine will be available in Australia. Each takes some inspiration from the marque’s oversubscribed 86 Racing Series that runs as an undercard to the Virgin Supercars Championship.
Based on the top-grade Toyota 86 GTS manual variant, the 86 limited-edition performance package is priced at $41,490 - an increase of $4,550 with the premium paint.
Before you ask, no, it doesn't have a turbo.
But chief among the mechanical changes are larger Brembo performance brakes and specially tuned Sachs performance dampers.
Substantially beefier rotors measure 326mm x 30mm with four-piston calipers at the front (GTS has 294mm x 24mm), and are clamped by larger pads. The rear benefits from 316mm x 20mm rotors with two-piston calipers (GTS has 290mm x 18mm).
The fitment of Sachs dampers adds to the lightweight sports car's renowned responsiveness and stability, according to Toyota.
Under the bonnet, the Toyota 86's 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol is unchanged from the standard car. It makes 152kW at 7000rpm and 212Nm at 6400-6800rpm.
The dynamic enhancements are complemented by a new paint scheme called Solar Orange.
In addition, the limited edition model rear spoiler and door mirror housings have a metallic black finish, complemented by new 10-spoke 17-inch anthracite-coloured alloy wheels.
"Whether driven on the open road or on the track, the combination of beefier brakes and uprated suspension involving two renowned performance brands is designed to further distinguish Toyota's lightweight coupe as an authentic driver's car," said Tony Cramb, Toyota Australia executive director.
