Toyota's youth-focused (and US-only) Scion brand has prepared four modded versions of its FR-S coupe, which we know as the Toyota 86, for the Mecca of all aftermarket expos – the SEMA show in Las Vegas.
The makeovers range from mild to wild, and are designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences, while reflecting the versatility and tune-ability of the donor vehicle.
The tamest of the quartet is the Steve Aoki x Scion FR-S, which was designed by renowned DJ and producer Steve Aoki. Given the profession of its creator, it’s no surprise this one-off comes kitted with a fully operational mixing station, a custom Pioneer sound system with multiple component speaker packages, a deck lid-mounted LCD display, not to mention a fog machine and strobe lighting.
Also relatively mild is the FR-S 'Style J', billed as a "futuristic urban design" that incorporates cameras in lieu of wing mirrors, a custom leather interior and a frontal makeover that makes the car look a bit VW Scirocco-esque.
There's nothing shy or retiring about the Bulletproof FR-S Concept One, a supercar concept that packs a 373kW turbo engine and track-tuned suspension.
Conceived through a partnership with Bulletproof Automotive, the Concept One also features a carbon-fibre interior and a widened, handmade body festooned with race-style livery.
The wildest car of the bunch is the GReddy Performance x Scion Racing Drift FR-S, a drifting prototype equipped with a Rocket Bunny Ver. 2 aero kit and a GReddy turbocharged 2JZ-GTE engine capable of putting out 560kW.
Although the grey paintwork gives it a somewhat stealthy appearance, the bulging bolt-on guards, tarmac-scraping splitter and carbon-fibre rear spoiler hint at the menace that lurks within the Drift FR-S.
"The FR-S [aka Toyota 86] continues to be a SEMA favorite, and this year's builds take the sports car in every direction," said Steve Hatanaka, Scion marketing and special events manager.
"All the SEMA vehicles draw on the passions of our drivers. Urban dwellers, entrepreneurs and the high performance enthusiasts all will find a Scion to get excited about this year."
