Toyota has added a rough and tumble wagon to its 70 Series range. The addition comes ahead of the arrival later this year of an all-new and unavoidably more expensive 200 Series range.
The 'four-plus-barn-door' 70 Series is intended to add an interim stepping stone for large 4x4 wagon buyers and soften the effect of the significant price hike that will come with the new twin-turbo V8 diesel flagship LandCruiser 200.
The Carsales Network understands that the new 200 range (more here) will not include 'stripped down' vinyl mats and 'barn-door' versions -- this role will be filled by the 70 Series.
The 70 Series range will now consist of Cab Chassis, Wagon and Troop Carrier models. The update brings styling changes and suspension revisions including a wider track and better steering feel, says Toyota.
All three variants have also gained an engine immobiliser, CD player with MP3 compatibility and a new grille, headlamps, front fenders and front bumpers. What they miss out on, however, is basic safety features such as antilock brakes and driver and passenger airbags -- even as options.
The 70 Series will feature a version of the 200's turbocharged V8 diesel -- a 32-valve 4.5-litre single-turbo Euro-IV compliant unit that delivers 151kW of power at 3400rpm and max torque of 430Nm from 1200-3200rpm. These stats represent power and torque increases of 23.7 and 13.1 per cent respectively -- compared to the previous six-cylinder turbodiesel.
Fuel economy has improved however -- to 11.5lt/100km for Cab Chassis models (from 11.7) and 11.9lt/100km for the new Wagon and Troop Carrier versions (from 12.0) when.
The new turbodiesel V8 engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission with two-speed transfer case and a part-time 4WD system with manual free-wheeling front hubs.
All LandCruiser 70 Series models are available in Workmate and GXL grades. The Cab Chassis line-up also offers a mid-range GX grade.
The new Wagon is "aimed at buyers who require a vehicle for both work and recreational driving," says Toyota. It comes with two front bucket seats and a three-seat rear bench.
The Troop Carrier offers three-seat or 11-seat Workmate grades or a five-seat GXL.
Recommended retail prices for the range start at $53,490 for the Cab Chassis Workmate. The most expensive model is the Troop Carrier GXL which kicks off at $61,490. See range prices below and note that the prices do not include airconditioning.
