Toyota announces mining-spec HiLux

Local customers drive development of niche HiLux variant
There's a new HiLux on the way, but Toyota is still tapping potential in the existing model, on sale here since 2005.
A new variant, the HiLux 4x4 Double Cab, fills a gap in the market identified by Toyota's mining industry fleet customers, who have been in need of a cab chassis model in the SR level of trim – with seating for five and turbo-diesel engine coupled with five-speed automatic transmission.
According to the car company, the new addition to the range provides greater flexibility at a more affordable price. Toyota says that the vehicle is well suited for the purpose of carting around aftermarket storage lockers, toolboxes, extra spare tyres and water or fuel tanks. The HiLux in this configuration can also be kitted out for 'full mining specification'.
HiLux now comprises 23 variants in the local market, following the introduction of the 4x4 SR Double Cab, which is priced at $43,740. This is $1500 less than the existing pick-up version.
With the 126kW/360Nm turbo-diesel powerplant driving through the automatic, fuel consumption as per the combined-cycle test is 8.7L/100km. Standard equipment includes a 6.1-inch infotainment screen, Bluetooth connectivity, and steering-wheel controls for operating the audio, telephone and voice recognition. Three new exterior colours – Graphite, Silver Sky and Eclipse Black – make up the balance of eight colours in the palette. Capped price servicing costs no more than $170 a time.
"This new 4x4 HiLux package has been uniquely developed to meet the demands of workers in the harsh and remote conditions experienced in Australia's mining and exploration industries," said Tony Cramb, Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing.
"Equally, those attributes make it a rugged, dependable and affordable choice for businesses and individuals around the country, many of whom spend large amounts equipping their HiLux as a workhorse," he was quoted saying in a press release.
"Our dealers are targeting an overall increase in volume as a direct result of the new variant, ensuring HiLux will continue its extensive record of sales leadership."
