Toyota announces running changes for HiAce

Toyota has progressively introduced a raft of changes over the past twelve months for the sales leader in the van segment, the HiAce

Manufacturing a van is often a process of constant, but minute improvement.

Product planners may need to know when an imported car's specification changed from analogue to digital clock for example, but the punters tend not to be that interested.

So Toyota has waited twelve months to announce the cumulative upgrades to the company's HiAce range -- changes implemented since production for October 2006.

The major change -- and presumably those who have already purchased a HiAce turbodiesel during the past year will already be aware of this -- is the 'new' 1KD-FTV intercooled engine, which displaces 3.0-litres and produces 80kW of power at 3000rpm and 286Nm of torque between 1200 and 1600rpm.

This engine and the upgraded 2.7-litre petrol four (coded 2TR-FE) are both compliant with the Euro IV emisssions standard.

The diesel produces 5kW more power than the non-intercooled engine fitted to HiAce models previously. It also produces 26Nm more torque from lower engine speeds than the 2.5-litre engine fitted to other, lower-grade HiAce models.

Manual turbodiesel models fitted with the new intercooled engine also come with a larger-diameter clutch to handle the additional engine output and the same engine can be optioned with an automatic transmission.

The super long wheelbase (SLWB) HiAce can be identified with the improvements by a new radiator grille and revised seats. All models gain a rear door strap and, for security purposes, remote central locking, an engine immobiliser and an illuminated ignition lock barrel.

Other changes across the range include the introduction of front passenger seat recline adjustment, the adoption of front mud flaps and a rear 'under-mirror' as standard plus an upgrade to a combination of fabric and vinyl trim for the sunvisors.

Commuter bus variants are now equipped with a centre console and a front passenger seat configured for slide adjustment.

Current pricing for the HiAce turbodiesel variants starts from $35,290 (LWB). 2.7-litre petrol models are priced from $32,690 for the entry-level LWB variant.
