Toyota has targeted Australia’s penchant for beefy, off-road utes by announcing a $5000 TRD parts kit for the eighth-generation HiLux.
The off-road themed catalogue borrows seven items from the fabled TRD (Toyota Racing Development) division, along with a further eight items designed to improve the capability and aesthetics of the Japanese hay-hauler.
In a move that will see the HiLux pitted against the Ford Ranger Wildtrak and Volkswagen Amarok V6 in the minds of buyers, the package is solely available on new variants of the top-of-the-range HiLux SR5 double cab, with leather-accented trim and either black or white exterior paint.
The TRD package starts at $58,990 in white paint, manual transmission models – a $5000 increase over the garden-variety SR5.
“The transformation starts at the front with a dramatic red TRD-branded skid plate, which provides a stark contrast to the powerful new black TRD grille, TRD lower bumper cover and TRD fender flares,” Toyota says in a statement.
“Edgy black 18-inch six-spoke alloy wheels and a robust black sports bar enhance the unabashed macho look of this special HiLux, which also features black mouldings along the body side and the leading edge of the bonnet.”
The parts kit includes a towing kit (tongue, ball and wiring harness), ute liner, soft tonneau cover, tail light covers and TRD mudflaps. Inside, the TRD kit brings carpet floor mats and a TRD gear knob for automatic variants.
As revealed by motoring.com.au this year, the TRD-flavoured HiLux parts kit could serve as an entrée to a proper TRD variant – similar to the short-lived one last offered in 2005.
Toyota Australia executive director Tony Cramb said the decision to limit the TRD package to new SR5 models was simple – it alone accounted for more than half of 4x4 HiLux variants in 2016.
“Local buyers voted with their wallets to make HiLux the best-selling vehicle in Australia last year – and the majority clearly indicated their preference for upmarket features combined with HiLux’s renowned go-anywhere capability,” Cramb said.
“We have responded to that demand by compiling premium components, including the respected TRD brand, that will further distinguish HiLux from the competitors and from every other HiLux in our range.”
The TRD kit coincides with the release of a new Tonka HiLux Concept from Toyota Australia. While the bright yellow beast isn’t slated for production, don’t be surprised if you begin seeing elements of the prototypes roll off the floor of Toyota’s Australian dealerships soon.
