Toyota Camry: FAQs

The Toyota Camry may be seen by some as boring A-to-B transport, but it remains a sensible and popular choice for many. Here are the Toyota Camry FAQs you asked online

Which is safer: Toyota Camry or Toyota RAV4?

Both the Toyota Camry and Toyota RAV4 have a five-star ANCAP safety rating, but the Toyota RAV4 is a safer vehicle primarily because it’s based a newer platform with higher levels of technology.

The Toyota Camry received a maximum five-star crash-test rating in 2017, and while the Toyota RAV4 also achieved five stars when tested two years later, the testing criteria was more stringent and required higher levels of safety to achieve the top rating.

The Toyota RAV4 achieved a very high 93 per cent score for adult occupant protection and 89 per cent for child occupant protection.

What is the average life of a Toyota Camry?

The average life expectancy of a car is eight years or 240,000km, according to US-based Consumer Reports, however the Australian Bureau of Statistics says the average age of the Australian car fleet is up to five years older than that – in some states.

The effective life of a car very much depends on how the car is driven, how often it is serviced and where it is located, stored and fuelled. Car owners in coastal regions will experience more rust as salt speeds up the process.

Anecdotal evidence suggests some Toyota Camry vehicles including some Toyota Camry Hybrids – a popular choice of taxi in Australia – are still going strong after more than 15 years and 800,000km.

Is Toyota discontinuing the Camry?

No. The Toyota Camry is one of Toyota’s best-selling models globally and the Japanese car-maker currently has no plans to discontinue producing the vehicle.

Toyota stopped building the Camry in Australia in October 2017, but almost immediately began importing the new eighth-generation model from Japan. The company has no plans to stop selling the Camry in Australia.

What year is the best Toyota Camry?

The best Toyota Camry is almost always the most current model.

As the Toyota Camry continues to evolve, it has become safer via the adoption of more airbags and semi-autonomous driving aids, and more efficient as its hybrid powertrains become more advanced.

The Toyota Camry has also grown since its inception as a small car in early 1980s as the Celica Camry, offering more interior room and more in-car technology, like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring.
