Toyota gives glimpse of GR Super Sport hypercar

Japanese car-maker teases hard-core hypercar based on WEC LMP1 car; could rival McLaren Senna

Toyota has teased a single image of a road-going version of its TS050 Hybrid WEC endurance racer that it will unveil at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 12.

Called the GR Super Sport Concept, the wild new hypercar was developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing, the Japanese car-maker's motorsport division.

Details are few and far between but Toyota claims the concept benefits from "technological feedback acquired through motorsports activities", suggesting that the GR Super Sport could be powered by the same twin-turbo 2.4-litre V6 that incorporates an 8MJ hybrid system.

In the racer, the advanced powertrain pushes out an incredible 735kW.

Featuring motorsport-inspired aero that includes a huge fixed rear wing and shark fin engine cover, it's thought that if pushed into production the GR Super Sport would rival cars like the forthcoming Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro.

More details, as well as more teases, will be released in the build-up to the concept's unveiling at next month's Tokyo Auto Salon.

Toyota has announced that, as well as the new hypercar concept, it will also reveal fast Gazoo Racing versions of its 86 coupe and the Yaris.

You can't blame the Japanese car-maker for wanting to cash in on its huge investment in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), especially since its rivals Porsche and Audi have withdrawn from the race series, making it the sole works team in LMP1 racing.
