As Aussie buyers wait in eager anticipation for the incoming 2022 Toyota GR 86, which is not due to arrive until later next year, Gazoo Racing in Japan has unveiled a suite of new aero parts for the second-generation sports car.
Said to have been developed alongside the Toyota Super GT race car, the GR Parts package for the new 86 was developed with the help of virtual wind tunnel testing (‘Computational Fluid Dynamics’) and is primarily designed to improve downforce.
There are no unsightly rear wings or road-hugging diffusers – rather, the GR Parts package adopts minor alterations to the front spoiler, side skirts and rear-end.
Toyota says the kit’s aerodynamic effects are most noticeable at higher speeds, meaning you’re not going to gain much advantage between traffic lights but would potentially eke some benefit in circuit driving.
The kit is currently on sale in Japan at a price of $A4450. All the pieces feature undercoating but are not colour-matched, though you can opt for that for an additional $A200.
A casualty of global production delays crippling the industry, the 86 was originally expected to launch around now before being delayed to the second half of 2022.
The rain check means the related 2022 Subaru BRZ will have at least a six-month sales head start given first deliveries commence in the next few weeks.
The first batch of 500 units of the BRZ have already sold out, but more cars are apparently on the way.
