Toyota GR Supra Shooting Brake rendered

Audacious Toyota Supra mini-wagon is a tyre-shredding rear-drive Japanese-German marvel, in theory

Imbued with the sportiness and exclusivity of a rare European supercar, this Toyota GR Supra Shooting Brake will turn more heads than a nude celebrity romp at the Oscars.

The unofficial creation by talented digital artist Suga Chow via Instagram is a truly delightful design, and while it’s not the first time we’ve seen a Supra wagon, it’s more subtle and arguably more appealing than the ludicrously ultra-modern split-wing Supra wagon from 2020.

Blending the Toyota GR Supra coupe’s curvy design with a compact wagon rear-end delivers the sort of the optics that one could imagine coming from Toyota’s design studios, the sleek roofline blending seamlessly with the rear pillars and windows.

Powered by the same 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine (285kW/500Nm) as the coupe, with either manual or auto transmission, the rear-drive scorcher would theoretically rip from 0-100km/h in a similar 4.4 seconds – only it would do so with way more panache.

While the chances of Toyota building a GR Supra Shooting Brake are as likely as the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo making a return, Toyota does have form in this segment.

Rewind to 2016 and you may remember the Aussie-designed Toyota 86 Shooting Brake concept car, conceived by Toyota Australia’s then design boss Nick Hogios.

At the time, Hogios said: “Of course I’d love to see this car on the road, but there’s obviously production realities and affordability.”

That applies doubly to the Supra SB you see rendered here.

But bear in mind that the GR Supra’s donor car, the BMW Z4, recently spawned an official two-door shooting brake – also designed by an Aussie, Calvin Luk – with its avantgarde Touring Coupe concept.

Maybe Toyota will indeed provide the current fifth-generation GR Supra with a special send-off like a shooting brake or a convertible before the sixth-gen sports car rocks up around mid-decade, rumoured to be an all-electric coupe.
