Toyota GR Supra Sport Top Edition concept gets targa roof

Current GR Supra set for the chop ahead of this year's online SEMA car show

Toyota USA has previewed the Toyota GR Supra Sport Top Edition concept it will reveal at this year's SEMA360 online car show.

Claimed to draw direct inspiration from the fourth-generation Supra, the new roadster based on the current A90 Toyota GR Supra features a large removeable panel.

In a short video released by the Japanese car-maker, a Toyota USA engineer explains how the GR Supra Sport Top Edition is being created for the modified car show, revealing that instead of a one-piece roof, the A90 roadster's hard-top is made up of two pieces to enable it to be safely stored in the boot.

Toyota is also developing power-operated pop-up latches for easier removal, while adding in extra structural support to add back rigidity lost from gas axing the roof panel off the coupe.

Elsewhere, the SEMA concept gets the previous Supra Heritage Edition's wild styling kit that includes an imposing rear spoiler that's claimed to pay tribute to the previous MIV Supra.

Stay tuned, because Toyota is set to reveal its GR Supra Sport Top Edition concept in the next few days.

Sadly, despite the fact an open-air Toyota GR Supra is feasible (it was developed alongside the BMW Z4 roadster), the Top Edition is likely to remain a concept car fantasy.
