Order books for the 2024 Toyota GR Yaris have finally reopened for virtually the first time since shortly after the Japanese brand’s smallest hot hatch was first launched Down Under in late 2020.
Toyota Australia caused a sensation when it announced the first 1000 customers would pay just $39,950 drive-away (versus the standard list price of $49,500 plus on-road costs) and it pulled a similar trick when the more focused Rallye version arrived, the first 250 of which were offered at $56,200 drive-away (compared to the standard RRP of $54,500).
These initial vehicles were snapped up extremely quickly and the combination of high demand and limited supply – partly due to the COVID pandemic – led to a stop-sale being announced in June 2021.
Aside from a brief respite in October 2022 when 160 vehicles were secured for Australia, order books have remained closed.
However, with fresh stock having arrived and been allocated to dealers, those order books have now reopened and from July production Toyota intends to fulfil orders on a ‘first in, first out’ basis to ensure any new arrivals go to those who have been waiting longest.
It is important to note that these cars are still the current GR Yaris, not the heavily upgraded model that was announced at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January and is scheduled to land locally in late-2024 or early-2025.
To date, Toyota has sold almost 2600 examples of the GR Yaris in Australia, with the Rallye recently notching up its 1000th customer, adding to the tally of 1590 base models.
