Toyota Australia has finally locked in a September launch for the second-generation 2022 Toyota GR86, followed by an orange-themed 2022 Toyota GR 86 10th Anniversary Edition.
Revealed yesterday and due here in the final quarter of the year, just 86 examples of the special-edition sports car will be available to Aussie 86 fans in the months following the local launch of the regular rear-drive coupe range.
The special Toyota GR 86’s eye-catching metallic paint will be matched within the cabin by a two-tone black and orange interior featuring embossed ‘10th Anniversary’ logos on the door trims, but that’s where the differences seem to end with no confirmed mechanical or equipment upgrades to report.
This is a stark contrast to the 2023 Toyota GR 86 Special Edition, which also dons a lairy orange paint job, as well as matt-black forged alloy wheels and spoiler extensions.
Crucially though, the extra visuals are backed up by a GR-sourced cat-back stainless-steel performance exhaust system.
Save for the enhanced acoustics, however, the bespoke exhaust doesn’t liberate any extra power from the free-breathing 2.4-litre flat four-cylinder petrol engine, meaning both the US and Australian special-editions will ship with the same outputs as the standard GR 86.
In Australia that means peak power and torque figures of 174kW and 250Nm respectively, with the naturally-aspirated boxer engine once again paired to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
Toyota Australia is yet to reveal anything concrete about the 10th Anniversary’s standard equipment list beyond the orange bits, but the press images suggest it will likely be based on the more lavish variant within what’s again expected to be a two-grade model range, judging by the leather and ultrasuede seat upholstery.
“More details on the 10th Anniversary Edition will be revealed when the new GR 86 launches in September,” said Toyota.
“Toyota Australia can also announce that Gazoo Racing Club members will gain priority access for ordering the 10th Anniversary Edition.”
Whether there’ll be any examples left over for the average Aussie sports car buyer remains to be seen, but Toyota Australia’s sales, marketing and franchise operations vice-president Sean Hanley nonetheless said the special-edition was an exciting milestone for the GR brand.
“Ten years ago, we launched the original Toyota 86 in Australia, creating a following for those wanting a sports car that blends reliable performance and great value,” he said.
“With the new generation GR86 just around the corner, what better way to commemorate a decade of our exciting coupe than with this special 10th Anniversary model.”
