The Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) has awarded selected Toyota HiLux models five stars in its latest crash safety test. But the new rating only applies specifically to single cab and extra cab 4x4s. Dual cab variants favoured by active families and 4x2s weren't tested by ANCAP, so these remain four-star vehicles for the moment. In contrast, Ford's Ranger offers five-star protection for all variants other than 4x2 single cabs.
It's good news for Toyota, with all HiLux post-August 2013 production of the five-star variants now eligible for purchase by fleets that insist on high levels of safety for occupational health and safety reasons. However, the top-selling Toyota lags behind the best in segment in terms of passenger safety.
In ANCAP's press release issued overnight, the crash safety authority revealed that the HiLux models tested now incorporated seat belt reminders and enhanced knee protection under the dash. According to ANCAP, the HiLux passed a side impact pole test to achieve its five-star standing.
"The light commercial vehicle market has been very competitive in recent years with more fleet buyers and consumers demanding ANCAP 5 star safety ratings," said ANCAP Chairman Lauchlan McIntosh.
"Toyota should be congratulated for bringing the Hilux 4WD utes to this level of safety. This is an excellent case study of a very strong shift in the light commercial vehicle market driven by safety. There is no longer any excuse for fleet buyers when it comes to safety - they should accept nothing less than five-star safety."
ANCAP anticipates that the dual-cab 4x4 HiLux will also secure a five-star rating in due course. Toyota has not upgraded the 4x2 variants, so the safety rating for those vehicles is expected to remain four stars for the foreseeable future.
