Toyota HiLux, Fortuner recalled over braking issue

Faulty brake booster on ute and large SUV could lead to increased stopping distances

Toyota Australia has issued a recall for 24,000 examples of its top-selling Toyota HiLux and the related Toyota Fortuner due to a potential fault with the brake booster that could increase vehicle stopping distances.

Affecting vehicles produced between June 2018 and December 2018, Toyota says the strength of the resin piston within the brake booster could degrade “due to improper moulding conditions during production”.

“If this were to occur, repeated operation of the brake pedal may cause the piston to break, potentially causing loss of braking assist and therefore increasing the vehicle stopping distance,” the company said.

Toyota said it will contact owners via SMS, email and/or mail, asking them to contact their nearest dealer for inspection and, where required, free replacement of the brake boost assembly.

A replacement of the brake booster – which increases braking assistance when the driver applies force to the brake pedal – would take approximately three hours at the dealership.

The company said owners can continue to drive their vehicle in the meantime.

See the details provided in the table below. Owners can also contact the Toyota Recall Campaign Helpline on 1800 987 366 (Mon-Fri 8:00am-7:00pm AEDT).
