Toyota HiLux refreshed
Upgraded looks and features for Toyota's star performerToyota has officially announced a new model year upgrade aimed at keeping the current car fresh and appealing to consumers in the lead-up to a new model next year.
As we reported back in September, Single Cab and Extra Cab Toyota 4x4 HiLux workhorses have picked up a five-star ANCAP safety rating, through the addition of stability and traction control, brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution (as well as a front-passenger seatbelt reminder) to the standard specification.
The safety upgrades are accompanied by a general refresh that embraces new display audio systems on all models and, for diesels, a new five-speed automatic transmission.
Top-shelf SR5 HiLux models pick up a standard reversing camera, as well as SUNA traffic info incorporated into the SatNav system. 17-inch alloys replace the previous 15-inch wheels fitted to the 4x4 SR5 Extra Cab versions, and 4x4 SR versions are now fitted with 225/70x17 all terrain tyres.
The new display audios have a 6.1-inch screen, plus auxiliary and USB inputs, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity as well as steering wheel mounted audio control switches.
SR and SR5 HiLux get steering wheel controls that include voice recognition, Bluetooth, and a multi-information display showing fuel economy, average speed, cruising range, outside temperature, compass and time of day.
All models gain a refreshed interior with new colours and materials. Extra Cab versions get a black interior, while the single-cab features black and grey trim.
HiLux also shifts its focus more to diesel, with fewer V6 petrol variants available. Engines comprise a 126kW/343Nm 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, a 116kW/240Nm 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol and a 175kW/376Nm 4.0-litre petrol V6.
The 4x2 range includes four Single Cabs (three Workmate, one SR) and two Extra Cabs (SR). 4x4s include two Single Cabs (SR) and three Extra Cabs (two SR, one SR5) for a total of 11 Single Cab and Extra Cab variants.
Revised Double Cab HiLux versions are expected to follow with an on-sale date of mid January 2014.
