Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series almost gone

Low stocks of Toyota’s top-selling flagship SUV means some model grades are all but sold out

Sales of the 13-year-old Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series have shown no signs of slowing, increasing by more than 60 per cent year-to-date compared to 2020 – a year in which it was Australia’s fifth top-selling vehicle overall.

But the sales stampede looks set to change over the next few months as stock levels of the hugely popular 4x4 off-road wagon dwindle.

The vast majority of Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series sales have been for top-spec VX and Sahara models, and dealer sources have told carsales both those model grades – and the limited-edition Sahara Horizon – are sold out.

Indeed, only the GXL model has been available from showrooms since as far back as April 11, according to dealer sources.

Toyota Australia wouldn’t comment on remaining stock levels, nor if the Japanese factory that builds it has ceased production of the LandCruiser.

However, it’s understood that the factory is no longer manufacturing the current LC200, and the only remaining stock left in Australia is almost exclusively entry-level GXL model grades.

“Due to ongoing high demand there is limited supply of LandCruiser in our dealer network at the moment,” a Toyota spokesperson stated.

“We recommend any customers interested in buying one should contact their nearest Toyota dealer to see what stock is available.”

Reports from Japanese media, including Best Car Web, claim that Toyota switched production to the new LandCruiser 300 Series in early May, which would match up with dozens of LC300s spied without camo recently in the Middle East.

The sales rush on the current Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series is being driven by customer desire to get the last turbo-diesel V8 engine, given Toyota’s next-gen 4x4 due in Australia later in the year will get a turbo-diesel V6.

Demand for tow-friendly and off-road vehicles is also being fuelled by Australians who continue to explore holiday destinations at home due to COVID-related restrictions.

If the sales rush continues, Toyota could find itself in the unenviable position of having no LandCruiser stock whatsoever in the coming months, ahead of the all-new model’s arrival in late 2021.

Toyota dealers are continuing to charge higher prices for the LandCruiser and private sellers are cashing in too, with outrageous prices of more than $200,000 for second-hand LC200s seen here on carsales.

Prices for the new Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series are expected to rise significantly above the current recommended retail prices spanning $80,996 to $124,396 (plus on-road costs).

Meanwhile, the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series workhorse range continues for the foreseeable future.
