Toyota LandCruiser prices hit new heights

Asking prices for final V8 ’Cruiser hit almost $200K as search volume rises and supplies dry up ahead of new 300 Series

Dwindling supplies and unprecedented demand for the 13-year-old Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series is driving record asking prices ahead of the arrival of the all-new 300 Series later this year.

The 2022 Toyota LandCruiser is expected to be six-cylinder only and powered by a Mazda-sourced 3.3-litre inline-six turbo-diesel when it arrives Down Under in late 2021, making the outgoing 200 Series the last V8 LandCruiser SUV.

That and a surge in popularity of off-road and tow vehicles as Aussies holiday at home post-COVID restrictions has helped spur demand for the 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8-powered 200 Series.

It was launched back in 2007 but last year found more than 15,000 buyers (up 9.2%) and a further 2825 so far this year – up almost 50 per cent.

Toyota Australia won’t say how many new 200 Series vehicles remain available or when production ends, but it admits demand has exceeded its expectations and carsales understands final dealer stocks have been allocated.

As a result, online asking prices for both new and used LC200s – offered for sale by both dealers and private sellers – have reached record levels, and last month the LandCruiser was second only to the Ford Ranger in terms of carsales search volume (see table below).

Currently there are 98 LandCruiser 200s for sales on carsales – 82 of them new – and, interestingly, the 10 most expensive examples are all used vehicles from enterprising private sellers and priced over about $150,000.

The highest current asking price is $195K for a top-shelf 2021 Toyota LandCruiser Sahara Horizon with 1000km on the clock in South Australia – about $63,000 or 55 per cent above its list price of $131,896 plus on-road costs.

The cheapest new Sahara Horizon is priced at $144,641 drive-away ($12,745 above RRP) and there are a number of new Saharas listed at $137,222 drive-away – $12,826 above RRP.

Toyota’s list prices for the 200 Series start at $80,996 plus ORCs for the entry-level GX and the only other variant priced under $100K is the GXL at $92,696, but asking prices are likely to continue to increase as remaining stock is exhausted.

The Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series has been available only with a 200kW/650Nm 4.5-litre twin-turbo diesel V8 since the 4.6-litre petrol V8 was axed from the range in late 2019.

While the LandCruiser 70 Series line-up will continue with its 151kW/430Nm 4.5-litre single-turbo diesel V8, the all-new 300 Series is expected to return to straight-six diesel power for the first time since the 100 Series.

The 2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series is expected to be revealed in Japan in September with a Lexus-derived 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 offering about 300kW/600Nm and paired to a 10-speed automatic.

An electrified hybrid version of that engine is expected to follow, but when the LC300 arrives in Australia late this year we expect it to be powered exclusively by a new 210kW/600Nm SKYACTIV-D 3.3 inline diesel six developed for the next-gen Mazda6 and CX-50.
