Toyota 86 Black Limited launched

Limited-run Toyota 86 coupe pays tribute to the last special-edition AE86s and could mark the end for the current-gen Toyota sports car

Toyota has released pictures of a new special-edition based on its 86 coupe that pays tribute to the very last run of AE86 Sprinter Trueno sports cars that inspired it.

The new Toyota 86 Black Limited lifts its name and iconic black and gold colour combo from the original AE86 Black Edition, which marked the end of the legendary front-engine, rear-drive coupe that was made from 1983 until 1987.

Copying the original, the modern Toyota 86 Black coupe gets black metallic paint and 17-inch bronze/gold alloy wheels that hide uprated Brembo brakes.

Special SACHS dampers complete the mechanical changes. Beneath the special Toyota 86 the underbody has also been tweaked to improve the aero.

Like the '86 AE86 special, there's also the added option of bronze stripes.

Inside, there are Black Limited bronze logos and a combination of leather and Alcantara trim on the seats, with the latter employed to wrap the top of the dashboard.

Unlike the original 400-unit run of final AE86s, Toyota says it will roll out just 86 examples of the Black special-edition and all will be for the Japanese market, where prices start at 3,198,727 yen ($A48,000).

With an all-new replacement for the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ confirmed to be under development and expected in the first half of 2021, it's thought the latest special-edition of the Toyota coupe could be the beginning of a long farewell for the current model.
