Toyota Mirai travels record 1003km on hydrogen power
Hyundai Australia’s record FCEV long-distance run in NEXO gazumped by Toyota team in EuropeToyota has gazumped Hyundai and set a new Guinness world record for the distance travelled on a single tank of hydrogen fuel, with the new-generation 2021 Toyota Mirai fuel-cell electric vehicle covering more than 1000km.
Beginning their journey in Orly, France, the team comprising a Toyota engineer, product manager, PR and hydrogen fuel specialist managed to cover a total distance of 1003km on just 5.6kg of liquid hydrogen.
That figure is all the more impressive since the official range estimate for the second-generation Toyota Mirai FCEV is 675km.
The consumption on the record-beating run is claimed to equate to around 3.62L/100km, although no official average speed of the trip was released.
Toyota claimed all four drivers adopted an "eco-driving" style.
Helping maximise the range for the record attempt was the Mirai's regenerative braking feature that feeds energy back into its small 1.2kWh lithium-ion battery to be deployed later.
The record-breaking run in the Toyota Mirai comes just weeks after Hyundai set a record of 887.5km on a trip with its new Hyundai NEXO FCEV that began on the outskirts of Melbourne and ended up north of Broken Hill.
