Toyota Oz reveals its final Camry

Minor upgrade for Toyota's Australian-made Camry revealed

Toyota has announced what's likely to be the final upgrade for its Australian-made Camry line-up before production ceases at its Altona plant in Victoria next year.

The are no changes to pricing for the seven-variant mid-size sedan range, except for the sports-themed Atara SX, which received the bulk of the updates and is now priced $1500 higher.

Positioned above the base Altise, which continues to open the range at $26,490 plus on-road costs, and the Atara S (from $29,490), the Atara SX now costs $33,490 plus ORCs.

The Atara SL remains the Camry flagship, priced at $37,440 plus ORCs, and all three variants except the Atara SX remain available in petrol-electric hybrid form -- priced $4000 higher for the entry-level Altise and $3000 higher for the Atara S and Atara SL.

On sale from June 6, all 2016 Camry models will meet the stricter Euro 5 emissions standard – although there are no other changes to the 2.5-litre petrol auto and petrol/electric CVT powertrains – as well as bringing ISOFIX rear child safety seat anchors.

New for the top-shelf Atara SL only is wireless phone charging capability for compatible smartphones fitted with a Qi induction loop or special cover, plus the option of 18-inch alloy wheels and sports suspension (as part of a package that costs $2950 and also includes a sunroof), while all Atara models also bring front and rear corner parking sensors.

Toyota says the $1500 price hike for the Atara SX is "more than justified by the added equipment", which is headlined by a colour 4.2-inch TFT driver's display that's linked with the multimedia system and shows audio, navigation and other information.

The revised Atara SX also gains a powered rear sunshade plus satellite-navigation, a premium JBL sound system with DAB+ digital radio, expanded Toyota Link functions and active guidelines for the reversing camera display, all via the 7.0-inch infotainment screen.

Cosmetically, the 2016 Atara SX adds new 18-inch alloy wheels and red inserts along the lower edge of the grille and rear bumper diffuser.

"Toyota will continue to build on Camry's success with advances in technology, safety, comfort and convenience, value and driving enjoyment, ensuring it remains one of Australia's favourite cars for many years to come," said Toyota Australia executive director of sales and marketing Tony Cramb.

"Families and business owners will appreciate the added appeal of the new features, while the introduction of the new-technology wireless phone charger will give Camry an edge in the competitive prestige segment above $35,000," he said.

Toyota's Camry has been Australia's top-selling medium car for a record 22 consecutive years, but will be replaced by an imported model from either Thailand or Japan when the world's biggest car-maker closes its Melbourne factory late next year.
