Australia’s top-selling large SUV has discovered its dark side with the launch of the Toyota Prado Matte Black edition in Japan.
Featuring a baleful exterior overhaul, the Prado’s grille, fog light surrounds, headlight garnishes, side mirrors, roof rails and 18-inch alloy wheels are now matte-black, but there’s no chassis or powertrain upgrades to speak of.
Priced between 4.3 and 5.1 million yen, or around $A47,000 to $A55,000, the Prado Matte Black edition is powered by the same 150kW 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine that’s offered exclusively in the Prado in Australia, or a 121kW 2.7-litre petrol mill.
A six-speed auto channels power to all four wheels.
Toyota Australia hasn’t officially ruled out the special-edition Prado, but carsales understands the brooding seven-seat SUV is unlikely to be offered in Australia.
“Toyota Australia is continually studying the market for new opportunities to offer exciting new products to Australian customers,” a Toyota Australia spokesperson said.
“At this stage, however, we have no announcements to make on any updates to Toyota Prado,” they said.
While Toyota Australia did bring the LandCruiser 200 Series 70th Anniversary Edition to Australia to farewell the last of the V8 diesel-powered LC200 models, it’s expected the current Prado will be handing around for a little while longer before it gets a swansong limited-edition.
Toyota updated the Prado in mid-2021 with extra safety equipment and modest visual changes and is set to deliver another technical upgrade to the popular family SUV before it’s replaced by an all-new model that may be revealed in 2023 but is unlikely to arrive in Australia until 2024.
The new Prado will deliver significant improvements on the current vehicle, which dates back 13 years to 2009, potentially including a Ford Everest-rivalling diesel V6 engine and even a brand-new petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.
Despite being ancient in automotive terms, the Prado remains the top-selling vehicle in its class Down Under, outselling its nearest competitor – also a Toyota, the Kluger – by a huge margin.
Toyota has sold 14,025 Prados thus far in 2022, equating to nearly 20 per cent of the large SUV segment, followed by the Kluger with 7972 sales and an 11.2 per cent market share.
