Toyota is expected to cut the price of its most affordable Prius model in the wake of the arrival of the Lexus CT200h – the starting price of both cars is currently $39,990.
The Prius is also being squeezed from below – and from within its own ranks – by the $36,990 Toyota Camry Hybrid.
More than 6000 Toyota Camry hybrids were sold last year – compared to just 3040 Toyota Prius hybrids last year – a drop of 64 per cent.
So far this year Prius sales are down 62 per cent – just 124 Prius vehicles have been sold.
Toyota Australia refused to speculate on how much the Prius price would be cut – or when – but The Carsales Network understands that a pricing announcement is due within the coming month.
"We don’t comment on pricing speculation," said Toyota Australia spokesman Mike Breen.
