Toyota Australia has issued a safety recall notice for HiAce vans between December 2009 and March 2012, totalling about 12,000 vehicles.
The problem relates to automatic transmissions that may not shift into or out of gear because a manual valve inside the gearbox isn't strong enough.
"On the involved vehicles, shifting the gear lever from P-R-N-D-2-L moves a manual valve inside the automatic transmission to engage the intended gear position," says Toyota.
"Due to a lack of strength in the manual valve lever pivot connection, the intended gear shift position may not match the vehicle behaviour, i.e. unable to shift out of P or unable to shift out of a drive position (R-D-2-L)."
Toyota dealers will replace the manual valve lever used for the control of gear selection in the automatic transmission with a new one at no cost to owners of affected vehicles.
The repair will take approximately four hours and Toyota says no cases of the issue have been reported in Australia.
The Japanese car-maker says it will contact all impacted owners by mail once parts arrive, requesting that they make an appointment at their preferred Toyota dealer.
In the meantime, concerned owners can call the Toyota recall campaign helpline on 1800 987 366 (Monday to Friday).
