Toyota recalls 3.8 million vehicles
Faulty floor mats bad news for America but Australia not affectedToyota Australia has confirmed that no local cars are involved in a recall of almost four million Toyota and Lexus vehicles in North America. It is understood there have been significant reports of floor mats getting lodged under the accelerator causing the car to get jammed at full throttle.
The recall has been initiated by Toyota after US authority the National Highway Traffic and Safety Association (NHTSA) alerted owners to the problem.
It is expected to cover 3.8m vehicles and includes the Toyota Camry (2007-'10), Avalon ('05-'10), Prius ('04-09), Tacoma ('05-'10) and Tundra ('07-'10) as well as the Lexus ES 350 ('07-'10) and IS 250 and 350 ('06-'10).
In the US Toyota and the NHTSA are asking all owners to remove the floor mats immediately until a suitable repair or replacement can be arranged.
Locally Toyota Australia spokesman Mike Breen has confirmed to the Carsales Network that Australian examples of the cars in question use different mats with different fixing mechanisms.
"Doesn't affect us," Breen said.
"We have a totally different way to fix the floor mat in the vehicle. We also have a different mat."
