Toyota has announced a safety-related recall on its Prius hybrid hatch. The recall affects a limited number of NHW20 model Prius built during the period July 2003 through to November 2005.
In Australia, a total of 2596 Prius vehicles are involved in the campaign.
According to Toyota the safety recall relates to a possible fault in the steering system. If a large steering force is repeatedly applied to the vehicle (such as when the steering wheel is turned forcefully to full lock position or the tyre is in contact with the roadside curb) there is a chance that the steering intermediate shaft may become loose or develop a crack.
There have been no reported incidents of this happening in Australia.
A total of 990,000 vehicles are involved in the recall across the globe. In addition to Prius, this number includes specific overseas market Corolla and Avensis models. Local Corolla and Avensis models are not effected.
Toyota says owners will most likely become aware of a problem as a result of increased noise such as a rattle or a ‘knocking’ sound in the steering system.
Toyota will contact Prius owners individually by letter requesting them to contact their nearest Toyota Prius Authorised Dealer to arrange for rectification. This will require approximately one hour and is free of charge.
