Toyota reveals RAV4 pricing and Oz-first turbodiesel

After 20 years on the local market RAV4 finally arrives with option of turbodiesel power
More than 4.5 million RAV4s have been sold in 150 countries since its conception in 1994, but never before has the model been offered in Australia with the option of turbodiesel power.
Joining a 16-strong model line-up, Toyota will offer a (110kW/340Nm) 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine alongside two petrol offerings, a (107kW/187Nm) 2.0-litre four-cylinder and a (132kW/233Nm) 2.5-litre four-cylinder.
We had previously reported that the new RAV4 would be available with diesel power in Australia, but our information at the time indicated it would be auto-only. The 2AD-FTV turbodiesel unit, previously sold in Europe but not locally, will be offered with the choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission across all-wheel drive (AWD) variants, promising fuel consumption from as low as 4.9L/100km on the highway cycle.
The economic oiler is offered in all three RAV4 grades. The entry-level GX model (available from March 2013 production) is fitted as standard with 17-inch steel wheels, projector style headlights, a six-speaker single-CD tuner, cloth upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, 60:40 split-fold rear seat, roof rails, cargo net and roof-top spoiler.
Mid-spec GXL variants add 17-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera, display audio, sports seats, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, electric folding mirrors, keyless entry and push-button ignition. AWD variants add a sound-deadening windscreen.
Finally, top-grade Cruiser models adopt satellite navigation, a blind-spot monitoring system, electrically-operated tailgate, high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights, an eight-way power driver’s seat, and tilt and slide electric Moonroof.
All RAV4 models achieve a five-star European (EuroNCAP) and Australian (ANCAP) safety rating.
Fourth-generation RAV4 prices start at $28,490 (plus on-road costs) for two-wheel drive (2WD) 2.0-litre petrol manual GX models, $500 below the entry price of the current RAV4 CV ($28,990). Entry-level 2WD petrol models are offered optionally with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for $2500 while a step-up to the GXL variant elevates pricing to $32,490 for the manual and $34,990 for the CVT-equipped variant.
For 2.5-litre petrol AWD models, RAV4 will offer three grades, beginning with the GX manual from $31,990. The figure sees the asking price for AWD variants equal that of the outgoing model. RAV4 GXL models begin at $35,490 with top-spec Cruiser offered from $42,990. All 2.5-litre petrol AWD models are offered optionally with a six-speed automatic transmission for $2500.
Finally, the new kid on the RAV4 block, RAV4 turbodiesel, starts from $35,490 for the entry-level GX manual AWD, a price Toyota says is “keener” than most diesel rivals in this segment. It is topped by the mid-spec GXL from $38,990 and range-topping Cruiser from $46,490. All models are available optionally with a six-speed automatic transmission for $2500. This brings the new flagship model’s pricing to $48,990, or $1000 less than the previous generation’s range-topping ZR6.
Optionally, RAV4 GX models are offered with 17-inch alloy wheels from $600. A full-size spare wheel is available across the range from $300. Like all Toyota vehicles sold in Australia, RAV4 is covered by the capped-price Toyota Service Advantage at a maximum of $170 per service.
