Evoking memories of Toyota’s 1960s Sports 800 coupe, the S-FR Concept shown at the recent Tokyo Motor Show set the rumour mill racing: Will it become a production rival for upcoming Honda’s S660… Or even the new MX-5?
Boasting small dimensions (including a 2480mm wheelbase) and a rear-drive platform, the S-FR (Small, Front Engine, Rear Wheel Drive) is the latest sports car-aping concept to come from the biggest Japanese brand, continuing a return to sports car form set in motion by the successful 86.
Now Toyota-owned GAZOO Racing has reimagined the S-FR Concept as a track-ready weapon, slated for public debut at January’s Tokyo Auto Salon.
Carbon-fibre is extensively employed, endowing the racy S-FR with massive front and rear spoilers as well as dive planes. These add to the concept’s aero-rich design, topped off by massive rear diffuser ducting.
Wide flares offer a J GT-like stance and the heavily scalloped bonnet adds further aggression.
At this stage specification details for the S-FR Concept – let alone the mooted production S-FR – are unconfirmed. That that won’t stop rumours of a MX-5-aping 1.5-litre four-pot and six-speed manual transmission being favoured.
“Sure it’s only a concept, but exciting times and speaks volumes about Toyota’s commitment to building more exciting cars!” Toyota Australia Product Public Relations Manager Stephen Coughlan told motoring.com.au of the S-FR.
The Tokyo Auto Salon runs from January 15-17, 2016.
